May is Bike Safety Month. May marks the beginning of the summer season. It is the perfect time to head outdoors and take a bike ride with your friends and family. This month will raise awareness about bike safety and get more people out on their bikes.

Many cyclists are apprehensive of biking in unknown territory or weather conditions. This fear is not unwarranted as Florida ranks as one of the worst states for bike safety. Since the start of 2013, three cyclist have been killed in Lee County alone.

In response to this problem, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have enacted a campaign entitled “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow! Safety doesn’t happen by accident!”. FDOT messages will emphasize bike safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
