The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended the nation to cut our current drunk driving threshold from .08 to .05 to reduce drunk driving accidents. Their reasoning behind this change is simple; safety. Other countries have adopted this standard and reported that drunk driving fatalities have decreased by over 50% in less than a decade. They also stated that this law would not be enacted to prevent individuals from drinking at dinner, but to provide extra encouragement for those individuals to not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. The board stated that alcohol levels as low as .01 have been associated with reckless driving.

Did You Know?

  • Many countries across the globe have changed their alcohol content standard to .05 or lower.
  • This percentage is equivalent to about one drink for an 120 pound female and two drinks for an 160 pound male.
  •  A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, four ounces of wine, or one ounce of 80-proof alcohol.

Drunk driving accidents currently cause a third of all the people killed each year on U.S. highways and this number seems to continue to increase year after year. Florida is particularly a dangerous place to drive. Tourists come to visit our local beaches and restaurants for a good time without knowledge of our roadways and traffic conditions.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) posted that in 2011, 30% of all traffic deaths were caused by drunk driving.

What are your thoughts on the proposed change to DUI charges? How many people do you know  that have been involved in a drunk driving accident?
