Last Sunday, a BUI fatal accident occurred on the Naples coastline near channel marker 71. A Naples resident, his daughter and son-in-law were all ejected from their 15-foot boat when they crashed into a channel marker. The older gentleman was not as lucky as the other two boaters as they only suffered minor injuries.
It was released that alcohol was a factor in the crash. I cannot stress enough the dangers of boating under the influence (BUI). When you are out on the Gulf relaxing, drinking might be a part of your of your afternoon. You just want to sit back and relax, right? Boating under the influence dull’s your senses which makes the sun, wind, and ocean water as well as, the boat’s motion, vibration and engine noise intensified.
Facts About BUI:
- BUI causes 34% of fatal boat accidents every year.
- BUI with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level of .08% or more, a boater is 10 times more likely to die in a boating accident than a sober boater.
- BUI affects your peripheral vision, night vision, focus, ability to distinguish colors, cognitive abilities, judgement, balance, coordination, and reaction time.
