A Florida boating accident left 10 people hospitalized after two boats crashed at 6:30 p.m. last Sunday night near Elliot Key.

One of the boats carried 2 people while the other 36′ powerboat carried 16 people! Luckily, no deaths were recorded but the violent collision caused everyone involved harm. Of the 10 boat passengers taken to the local hospital, 3 suffered from nearly fatal injuries.

I cannot stress enough the dangers of boating at night. Here are a few way to keep you and your loved ones safe while boating at night and avoiding catastrophic accidents like this one last Sunday.

1. Slow Down!

Nighttime makes some objects not as visible especially when operating a boat at high speeds. Familiar landmarks can be altered or even disappear in the evening light.

2. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Dim the lights and turn down your stereo and pay attention to your surroundings. This could help you locate debris, docks, and other boats that might not have been visible otherwise.

3. Use Your Headlights Only When Necessary

Shining your headlights in the face of another boater is actually illegal so be aware of the other boaters around you.
