A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a car while trying to cross the street in North Fort Myers this weekend.

It’s at least the fourth pedestrian fatality in Lee County in about a month.

The most recent accident took place Saturday night when a 59-year-old man was trying to cross U.S. 41 near Hancock Bridge Parkway in North Fort Myers. He was hit by an SUV. According to investigators, the pedestrian ran in front of the vehicle. The driver was unable to keep from hitting the man.

Another pedestrian was killed on U.S. 41 in south Fort Myers a few weeks ago.  A black Dodge Ram hit a pedestrian just after 9 a.m. at U.S. 41 and Sanibel Boulevard. A few weeks earlier, an elderly couple was killed trying to cross Winkler Road in south Fort Myers. They were on their morning walk when they tried to cross the street near East College Point Drive.

There are many tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that pedestrians can follow to help keep them safer around vehicles:

  • Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
  • If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
  • Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.

Drivers also need to exercise caution to help reduce the number of pedestrian deaths. Here are some tips:

  • Look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times. Safety is a shared responsibility.
  • Use extra caution when driving in hard- to-see conditions, such as nighttime or in bad weather.
  • Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk.
