A Marco Island man accused of speeding and running a stop sign has been charged in the death of a 91-year-old woman, who died Saturday in the crash less than a block away from her home.
The crash happened early Saturday afternoon at Bayport Avenue and Tahiti Road. The woman was driving through the intersection when a 42-year-old man drove through the stop sign at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses.
Authorities charged Peter Ferreira with vehicular homicide and reckless driving. Investigators report that Ferreira said he was hurrying home from the gym after his workout to get some protein.

This is just another one of the many crashes that could have been avoided — and another life saved — if the driver paid attention, followed the speed limit and stopped at the sign.
A 91-year-old woman would still be around today to spend time with family and friends if the driver would have slowed down and stopped at the stop sign. Now, family and friends are mourning.
Let this serve as a reminder to drivers to take their time and follow all the traffic devices. Be alert to other drivers. Don’t just think of yourselves and think others will watch out for you. You need to be alert on the roadways.
