CarFit events are offered throughout the U.S. and are designed to check how well older drivers’ vehicles “fit” them. It’s also an opportunity to educate older drivers on safety tips and make them aware of the many resources available to help improve their driving skills.
In many ways, older drivers are safer than younger ones. They are less likely to speed and drive under the influence. They are also more likely to wear their seat belts. However, older drivers may have other issues to overcome such as limited range of motion to turn and see vehicles, diminished hearing or eyesight, etc. Some older drivers probably continue driving longer than they should.
Older drivers are also more likely to die in a car crash or suffer serious injuries because of the frailty of their aging bodies, according to car-fit.org.
Programs such as CarFit not only make driving safer for older drivers but also for the rest of us on the roadways. Everyone benefits.
At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with drivers to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety, according to the CarFit website. It takes about 20 minutes.
There are plenty of events planned for Southwest Florida and around the nation. See the list of events to choose one that works best for you or view the map to find locations, dates and times of CarFit programs.
