A bicyclist hit early this morning in Naples by a recycling truck died from his injuries. The crash happened just before 7 a.m. in the 4900 block of Tamiami Trail.

The crash is still under investigation. It is not yet known exactly how the crash happened. Follow the updates on nbc-2.com.

Whenever you hear about a crash, you can’t help but wonder what caused it. Did the driver not see the bicyclist or see him before it was too late? Did wet roadways play a factor? Did the bicyclist try to cross a road and not have enough time?

Bicycling is popular in Southwest Florida. It’s something you can do year-round in the Sunshine State. That means there are more cyclists sharing the roadways throughout the year here than in many other places. Because of its popularity, we also see more bicycle crashes with injuries and fatalities.

The League of American Bicyclists suggests Five rules of the road:

FOLLOW THE LAW

Know the law and follow it.

BE PREDICTABLE

Let people know where you are going. Don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you before turning.

BE CONSPICUOUS

Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use lights on your bike when necessary and make sure you make eye contact with drivers in potentially dangerous situations.

THINK AHEAD

Anticipate what others might do. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars.

RIDE READY

Make sure your bike is in proper working order and you have the proper safety equipment.
