Holidays are typically the most dangerous on the roadways. There are more people traveling to see family and friends and there’s more celebration — often involving alcohol.

New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day is no exception. In 2012, more than half of all traffic fatalities on New Year’s Day involved a drunk driver, according to MADD.

As you prepare to enjoy the New Year, don’t forget to plan for the important things that can keep you and others safe. There are several steps you can take to reduce drunken driving whether you plan to go out or you are hosting a party. Of course, having a designated driver who won’t be drinking any alcohol is the best advice. Perhaps this year, you should think about being the designated driver. That is the one way you can be 100% sure that you have a safe ride home.

Tips for hosting a party

  • Have people indicate their designated driver in the RSVP. Have special treats/gifts for the designated drivers.
  • Provide numbers to taxis and other driving services to guests.
  • Collect keys as guests arrive and only hand them to people who you are confident can drive safely. Tips on preventing an intoxicated person from driving.
  • Plan activities that don’t involve drinking and have plenty of non-alcoholic choices. You can come up with some fun non-alcoholic holiday beverages.

Tips if you plan to go out

  • Choose a designated driver who is responsible.
  • Offer to buy sodas and food for the designated driver to show appreciation.
  • Agree before the party that you will give up your keys if a friend thinks you should not drive.
  • Plan for a ride ahead of time whether a taxi or other service.
  • Have a friend or family member who you know you can call if you get into a situation where you need a ride.
  • Do not get into a car with someone who is intoxicated. It’s not worth risking your life.

MADD encourages making a plan

MADD is encouraging people to plan ahead for a safe holiday and to share those plans with others. They are asking people to share by using the hashtag #HoliDDay and sharing the image we’ve included in this blog.
