You don’t often hear about accidents involving skateboarders but it’s more common than you might think. In addition to the traffic dangers, cracks in the sidewalk, potholes, and other obstacles pose a threat.

In 2011, skateboard-related injuries accounted for more than 78,000 emergency room visits among children and adolescents (19 years old or younger).

There are many safety tips skateboarders and drivers can follow to help make the road a little safer. Skateboarders should obey traffic laws, wear bright clothing, wear protective gear, anticipate vehicle movement and follow traffic laws.

Motorists can do their part by paying close attention to the road at all times, watching for skateboarders along the road and in the road, and be prepared for any sudden changes in the skateboarder’s direction of travel or the rider falling.
