Eighteen-year-old Kevin Gonzalez is in critical condition after his truck overturned in a crash involving four vehicles.

Around 5 p.m. on July 25, Gonzalez was headed east on Palm Beach Boulevard when he crashed into the back of a Lexus and overturned.  Gonzalez’s truck then collided with a Toyota Tundra and rolled on its side before stopping.

After being hit, the Lexus collided with another vehicle and was shoved off the road into a palm tree in the median.

Gonzalez was thrown from his vehicle and taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. He was speeding at the time of the incident.

Accidents that involve speeding injure eight times more people than those hurt in accidents because they were not wearing a seatbelt. Speeding causes more injuries than  crashes involving alcohol, fatigue, or no restraint. Reducing your speed and driving the speed limit can save lives and money. Take a look at these reasons to drive slower:

Driving slower saves gas, and therefore saves money. Gradually accelerating and decelerating will burn less gas as well.

  1. You can save lives. At 35 mph, you are twice as likely to kill someone you strike as at 30 mph. Going the speed limit allows you more time to react to your surroundings
  2. Save time? Driving a few mph over the speed limit doesn’t actually save much time, and those few minutes aren’t worth it when you consider the risks of speeding.
  3. Stay relaxed. When observing the speed limit, you don’t have to stress about passing cars or getting frustrated by cars slowing you down.  Driving slower can reduce the risk of accidents and eliminate the fear of speeding tickets.
